Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide of the secretin/glucagon family, acting through VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors on immune, epithelial and smooth-muscle cells.
VIP is described as one of the most potent endogenous anti-inflammatory neuropeptides: it inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines, promotes regulatory T-cell generation and has shown protective effects in animal models of autoimmune and inflammatory disease 12.
