KPV is the three C-terminal residues of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It retains the anti-inflammatory activity of the parent hormone without its pigmentary effects, and is small enough to be transported into cells by the peptide transporter PepT1.
In murine colitis models, KPV taken up via PepT1 reduced intestinal inflammation, inhibiting NF-κB activation and pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion in intestinal epithelial and immune cells 1. Colon-targeted nanoparticle delivery of KPV reduced inflammation at doses 12,000-fold lower than free peptide 2.
