ARA-290 is an 11-amino-acid peptide derived from the helix-B surface of erythropoietin. It activates the tissue-protective EPO/β-common-receptor heteromer (the 'innate repair receptor') without stimulating erythropoiesis, separating EPO's cytoprotective actions from its haematopoietic ones.
In the defining study, ARA-290 was tissue-protective in models of ischaemic stroke, renal ischaemia-reperfusion and neuropathic pain, while producing no rise in haematocrit 1.
