5-Amino-1MQ is a membrane-permeable small molecule (not a peptide) that selectively inhibits nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT), an enzyme upregulated in adipose tissue during obesity that consumes NAD+ precursors and S-adenosylmethionine.

In the original characterisation, 5-amino-1MQ inhibited NNMT with high selectivity, reduced intracellular 1-methylnicotinamide in adipocytes, and — in diet-induced obese mice — reduced body-weight gain, adipose mass and adipocyte size while improving cholesterol levels 1.
