Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) built from the immunomodulatory tetrapeptide tuftsin plus the stabilising Pro-Gly-Pro tail. Developed alongside Semax in Moscow, it is characterised as an anxiolytic with nootropic properties and no sedative or muscle-relaxant effects.
In mice, Selank attenuated apomorphine-induced dopaminergic hyperactivity comparably to olanzapine; the effect was naloxone-blocked, implicating modulation of the endogenous opioid system 2. Further rodent work shows Selank protects against ethanol-induced memory impairment 1 and attenuates aversive signs of morphine withdrawal 3.
