L-Carnitine is the endogenous quaternary amine that shuttles long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane for β-oxidation. It is widely studied as an adjunct in metabolic and exercise research.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of nine randomised trials found that carnitine supplementation was associated with modest but statistically significant reductions in body weight and BMI compared with control 1.
